Who we are

Shady Grove Coffeehouse is a volunteer‑run, non‑profit acoustic music series sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Glen Allen, Virginia. For more than twenty-five years, we’ve brought exceptional local, regional, and nationally touring artists to Richmond’s northwest suburbs, offering audiences an intimate, welcoming, family‑friendly listening space.

About Us

Our Story
Shady Grove began in 1998, when members of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church organized a handful of concerts to help raise funds for a new building. Those early shows — featuring artists like Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Dana Robinson, Bob Franke, and Lui Collins — planted the seeds of a community tradition.

In 2001, as construction on our new church home progressed, we presented concerts throughout Richmond’s West End, including a memorable Groundhog Day Extravaganza at the Foxhall Clubhouse. That July, we hosted our first performance in the new building with Dave Nachmanoff. Since then, Shady Grove Coffeehouse has presented more than 200 concerts, building a reputation as one of the region’s most welcoming acoustic venues.

We typically present one concert each month from September through May, featuring a mix of beloved local per-formers and regional and nationally touring musicians. Net proceeds support the work of UUCC — but our deeper purpose is to nurture a vibrant home for acoustic, traditionally‑based music in our community.

Our Mission & Vision
Mission: The Shady Grove Coffee-house creates community through live acoustic music. We present exceptional artists in an intimate, listening‑focused environment where hospitality, artistry, and human connection thrive. Our concerts are family‑friendly and smoke‑ and alcohol‑free, reflecting our commitment to offering a warm, inclusive space for all.

Vision: We envision Shady Grove as a cherished gathering place where music builds relationships, strengthens community, and inspires compassion. We seek to preserve and promote acoustic traditions, support emerging and established artists, and foster a community of interest around folk and traditionally‑based music — all while supporting the ongoing work and growth of the Unitarian Universalist Community Church.
