Joseph Peter Kauffmann

Our dear friend and fellow SGCH volunteer Joe Kauffmann passed away on October 31, 2011, after a courageous and spirited fight against Amyloidosis and the blood cancer multiple myeloma.

Joe was born on October 8, 1958 and lived his entire life in Richmond. Joe attended John Marshall and Open High Schools and received a B.S. in Education from the University of Virginia in 1980. Joe's passion was cycling, and from a young age he worked in the bicycle industry as a self-taught bicycle repairman, eventually working as a service manager at local shops like Two Wheel Travel, Conte's, and finally Agee's Bicycles on West Broad.

Joe is survived by his son, Peter Kauffmann; his wife, Amy Scotch; his devoted cat, Sprocket; siblings, Paul Kauffmann Jr., Joyce Kauffmann, Bernadine Karns, Chris Kauffmann and Maria Sarahan; as well as numerous nephews, cousins, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Joseph Kauffmann Sr. and Edna Wysong Kauffmann; and his sister, Edna Mary Spain.

A celebration of Joe's life was held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church (UUCC) of Glen Allen where he was an active and beloved member. A reception was held at UUCC following the service at 11105 Cauthorne Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23059. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the UUCC Social Action Ministry at the address above.
