David H. Mucklow

April 2, 1952 - May 5, 2007

Our dear friend Dave Mucklow died suddenly on May 5, 2007.  Dave was a founding member of the Shady Grove Coffeehouse staff, and an avid musician. He studied both highland and lowland bagpipes, with James H. McIntosh and competed as a solo piper. With William "Bud" Diehl, he formed "Two Pipers".

He also formed "The Clam Brothers" with Scott Hammer, in which he played guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass, and concertina. Both of these duos had performed at SGCH. He was a long-time guitar student of Jimmy Payne, and had recently been instrumental in the musical education of Jimmy's son, Robin.

Dave is survived by his mother, Barbara Mucklow; his sisters, Roxanne Mucklow and Nadine Cornett; his nieces, Erica Cornett and Alicia Mucklow; his nephew, Joseph Cornett, and by many loving friends.  A memorial service for Dave was held at Second Presbyterian Church, on Saturday, May 26, 2007

A musical celebration of Dave's life was held as a joint SGCH-UUCC event on September 22, 2007, featuring performances of songs that Dave loved by musicians with whom he collaborated, including Bud Diehl, Jimmy and Robin Payne, Peter deFur, Kathy Wimmet, Dee Kysor, the UUCC Choir, and Scott Hammer.

Dave was a devoted student of piobaireachd, the oldest and most traditional form of highland piping. Contributions in Dave's memory are invited to the "David Mucklow Scholarship Fund for Piobaireachd Studies" c/o James H. McIntosh, 933 Braddock Rd., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15221.
